What We Do

The United Way Association of South Carolina is a strong voice for the collective interest of local United Ways in the Palmetto State. Since our organization came into being originally to strengthen relationships between state government and local United Ways, that voice still reverberates in South Carolina’s public policy arena. The Association is a key influencer of public opinion in a number of public policy areas: early childhood, workplace literacy, economic self-sufficiency, 2-1-1 services and non-profit accountability.

Since its inception as a member organization for local United Ways, the Association has earned a reputation for high-quality, easily affordable training and personalized technical assistance—especially valuable to those United Ways with limited resources for leadership development. We’ve also played a key leadership role in South Carolina’s charitable giving program for state employees, commonly known as the SCSEC.

Over the past two decades, as local United Way needs changed, so did the Association. Back then, no one could predict how fierce the competition would become for charitable dollars or that, one day, unrestricted giving would be challenged by donor choice. The South Carolina Marketing and Resource Development networks evolved, in part, to bring the best practices of the most successful United Ways to the forefront—strengthening the system. The governance of the United Way Association of South Carolina—a board of directors—reflects not only diversity of communities across the state, but also the informed perspective of local United Way volunteers from the private and public sectors.
